Operation "Fan Dabbie Dozie" 2015.

I wanted to put this game on at "Carronade" but was persuaded not to by the rest of the club! so after a long wait,I eventually set the table up,issued the Scenario and orders/objectives to the lads, and we played the game last night.

The Scenario-I can't say much more!!

These are the orders/objectives issued to myself and Graham as Scots commanders and Paul and Brian as Russian commanders.

Our "Rules" knocked up by me(who doesn't know a thing about modern warfare!) ranges etc are in our "measuring sticks" which are 300mm long.

This is the map we all worked off, when planning our tactics-the table cloth was our white-out sheet-very atmospheric!

The first, and last(!!) shot of Graham's command tank, peering through the gloom, trying to spot the Russian column-a cute shot from one of Brian's tanks knocked him out on the first shot!!-oh dear not again!!!!

This is how the table looked before any movement(and before Graham's demise!)

As Graham's tank burns nicely, the boys from "Yellow" company gather around to warm their hands, not realising that they now have no support!!

Paul has sent his "chopper"(no jokes please!) to spray my infantry company with "gatling" and rocket fire,I replied with a "Blowpipe" shot which missed and I think, exploded somewhere over Aberdeen!!-things were hotting up,but Graham and I stuck to our plan of holding a defensive line, whilst Paul and Brian stuck to their plan of Attacking!!!!!

Ominously, the Russian tanks roll forward(complete with hand made flags!),can the brave Tartan Army stop them?

In this shot,Paul has just "downed" my Helicopter with a lucky "blowpipe" shot and is sending a company of infantry complete with mortar crew against my Blue company sheltering in the field on the left flank-will Graham send me some support?

The "downed" helicopter and "broken" crew-still,they inflicted a bit of damage to one of the Russian Tanks-hurrah!!!

As Brian and Paul discuss how the battle is going, one of the Russian tanks has rolled onto one of my Pre-set Mine fields(that's the one in the foreground, beside the building) and has lost a track, and is therefore immobilised-hurrah!! Graham,at this stage is losing tanks through Brian's wonderful(lucky) shooting, and the Russian are creeping ever closer to the bridge.

BOOM!! as the Russian tank hits the minefield-one less to worry about!!

Two Russian infantry squads are trying to overwhelm my right flank-however they are just about to hit the other pre-set minefield as they advance!

My right flank is being overwhelmed by weight of numbers(even the minefield couldn't stop Paul's determined attack)-things are not looking good for the Tartan Army-time for the American Air Force(please,no Blue on Blue!!) to make its appearance!!

Even with the bombing run of the Americans and Graham's stout defence of the bridge and sending support to my left flank,we were doomed-look how close that Russian tank is to the bridge and their objective!!

It's all over!!-objective achieved by Russian forces, time for the Tartan Army to retire to Edinburgh, and try again!!
This was a fun game, enjoyed by us all,no offence was intended to our Scottish or Russian readers, and I'm sure no offence will be taken!
Roll on Thursday, son should be out of hospital by then, and we can have another game-probably Ancients, but who knows????

Modern Game based on Georgians vs Russians.

Before I start this report, may I say,on behalf of all the "boys" in the club, many happy returns to Brian who has a birthday tomorrow, we hope you have a good day.

Well what can be said about tonight's game? I will be the first to admit that I know "zilch" about any period past the Colonial times, however for the sake of diversity,I decided to put on a Modern Game, featuring Tanks,Planes,Helicopter,Mortars,Bazookas, and Infantry squads!! I must have been mad!
It was pretty obvious from the word "go" that everyone else knew a million times more than me,resulting in a bit of a fiasco.
However, you can't win 'em all, so I'll just print some photo's and leave it at that.

From move one we were in trouble(Dave,Richard and I ) Brian,Paul and Graham decided to keep all their troops hidden (good tactics) and we walked right into all kinds of ambushes etc.
Having lost two of our five tanks in the first two moves just about sums up the whole game!!

We brought on a Helicopter, and couldn't hit a thing with either the rockets or gatling gun!!

Brian's mortar seems to have some sort of laser-guided automatic "hit" function, knocking out an infantry squad, whilst his bazooka team was knocking out two of my tanks!!

Mad Dog Murdoch (Dave) can be seen here holding his head in shame at missing all his targets with the Helicopter, whilst Graham and Paul appear to be "gloating"

Richard's squad attempting to capture a defensive position-NO CHANCE MATE!!

Well, there's always next week-back to periods I know and understand.
Happy birthday Brian.

"Modern " Game SUnday 15.4.12.

Let me start this blog by saying I know very, very little about Modern warfare,so for me to have the temerity to put on a Modern type game and "knock up" a set of rules is outrageous!!Using the same terrain as for the last two games, with an added road buildings etc. I attempted this game, aided and abetted by Graham,Robin,Paul and Dave.
The rules are purely meant for a fast and exciting game and are not in any way supposed to reflect modern weapons effectiveness or ranges. All of the figures (54mm plastic) tanks and A.P.C. etc. were bought from the Pound Shop, the whole lot costing well under £10 !!And so to the game, the scenario is shown below, the Kakistani force was supposed to be invading Turdestan, but as it turned out the Kak. commanders,Graham and Robin, decided not to attack with any gusto but rather to defend!! This shot shows the original layout of the table with the Kakistanis

in column fanning out to attack and take both flank hills, the Turdestanis are defending the main ridge and the river crossing beside the bridge, and also in depth further back into the board.
This photo shows the Kak. commander directing operations from the safety of a rear position!

This was the highlight of the game,Dave's blowpipe knocking the Kak. helicopter out of the sky before it had even fired a shot in anger,Dave was happy,Graham was not!!

This is the Turdestani mortar crew opposite hill "A" which was occupied by Robin's troops, unfortunately the mortar was wiped out by accurate machine gun and inf. fire.

The photo below shows Graham's inf. about to occupy and dig in on hill "B",the sheep seemed to worry him and the troops didn't stay too long, being shot at by Dave's machine gun and inf.

This is the momentous occasion when Paul decided to join the battle having seen most of John's and Dave's troops and tanks battered to bits, however better late than never and it proved to be a wise move and possibly won the battle for the Turdestanis.

Where are Dave's troops? -DEAD!!!!!! Main ridge after bombardment by Kak. tanks and Infantry.

This is as far as the Kakistani forces managed to get,not even across the river! However I enjoyed the game, even if it was just to teach me that I really don't know anything about Modern Warfare.

Modern battle

Somewhere in the Balkans

We occasionally enter the world of modern warfare and treat these games as tactical exercises which usually involve hidden forces awaiting the advance of the opposition.

The game involved the advance along the length of the board by David and Graham's troops. They had mechanised columns with some air support and were restricted by terrain to using only the bridges for the heavy armour. The terrain was rolling and a village dominated the exit from the first bridge, situated on the ridge above the river.

Surely this would just entail a simple deployment exercise from one end of the table across to exit over the second bridge? You'd think they were expecting trouble!

This is the view of the table from the exit position, the dominant village at the far end of the board with the approach route in the upper right corner.

No sign of any arriving troops, or anyone else for that matter!

Hold on ....  is that a farmer and his cattle north of the bridge?

The invading forces have arrived. The locals have been warned ..... flee and take what you can with you. The local taxi has obviously broken down, with no time to repair it, the owner has abandoned it.

APC's head an armoured column, fully alerted to any hostile motion.

Will this be another fruitless day?

The figures and vehicles are all plastic and are our usual minimal cost purchases from Pound shops and other bargain bags. (See £30 army blog).
A bit of imagination and a nice paint job (well done again John) works really well.

Once again movement is done with our usual measuring sticks and the game is covered by our usual rules base upon number of bases/points when firing multiplied by an average dice. (2,3,3,4,4,5).
We don't have complicated tank/aircraft rules as we prefer to resolve them by a simple roll to hit/miss followed by damage inflicted against a points value. Hit it hard enough and it is out of action! ............Simples

I will leave you at the point that Graham
has sent his infantry across the river on
foot exploring the open fields, led
by his Officer.

Will that be wise?   BANG!
He drops.... now his squad are stalled.

What to do ?
Note the Hit/miss dice. Sponge covered, hence no damage to paint ...

David has sent his APC and dismounted
infantry up the steep slopes from the river
as well as over the bridge to scout the village approaches.  Oh he'll never fall for the
exploding car booby trap will he?
An RPG missile takes out the lead APC.

In inauspicious start .......... game on!

To be continued    ............
