Battle of the Gabali settlement.

Well,I have had my first 15mm Romans vs Gauls battle,as part of a mini-campaign,and needed to lie down in a darkened room after it!! I have opted to be the Roman commander,but tried to be as fair as possible in the game,whilst being aware of Roman tactics and weapon capabilities.

Top photo shows the scenario,bottom shows the terrain map and antagonists-this is part of my campaign diary.

These two photo's show the attack on the un-finished camp-one of the cohorts took "significant" casualties,which would tell in the forthcoming battle!

Top shows the initial Spanish deployment-note troops issuing from the rear gate!-bottom shows the "relief" column-came onto the board on move number three(dice throw!)-all was set for an epic battle.

First contact! I though that 4 cohorts and 2 cavalry units would be enough to drive the Gauls away from hill A-I was wrong-bloody dice!!!!-As the relief column arrived,they were immediately attacked..........................

The Gauls on hill C have spotted the relief column! half of them attacked,whilst the rest moved off the hill and joined in a general attack on the cohorts positioned outside the camp.

Top photo shows the Gallic attack just starting from hill B,bottom shows the warbands from hill C joining in-the Spanish auxiliaries are obviously going to be outnumbered-they need help from the relief column!!!

This shows the relief column troops doing very well,and winning the flank,however,Arsolius,the Spanish commander,is under severe pressure,and orders his cohorts back into the camp!-followed by hordes of screaming Gauls-this does not look good!!!

Tp shows the shameful retreat back into the camp,bottom shows the troops organising themselves,and actually doing okay against the Gauls,however the section held by some Syrian archers,are under pressure and might just give in to repeated attacks by superior numbers!!

They're in!!-this is bad,the Spanish need the relief column to come quickly..................

Top shows the relief troops,now re-organised,marching to the camp,bottom shows the cavalry being unleashed against the flank of the Gauls! Boxatrix,the Gallic commander, now sounded the retreat,and the Gauls fled for the hills!! hurrah!

The Gabali settlement is burned,as is the camp(as per usual practice) and the victorious troops march back to Crustinuts and the main Roman army.

As a wargame it doesn't get much more exciting than this-I was exhausted at the end of it,but felt that the Romano/Spanish troops deserved the victory.
