I received some very sad news last night-my old friend and fellow wargamer, author, lecturer and all round good guy CHARLIE WESENCRAFT died on Sunday the 6th of April. His son,John 'phoned to tell me the news,he died peacefully surrounded by his family, there will be no official funeral, but John is hoping to arrange a "reunion" of his friends and family, and will let me know when and where.
I first met Charlie back in 1971,at the first wargames "Do" at the Sallyport Tower in Newcastle, and have remained friends ever since-I will miss him.
He just loved wargaming,as these photo's show-his mind was always active, thinking of new ways to" game" and writing rules and books(there may be a new book published about the American War of Independence if a popular Publisher can be persuaded!) We will dedicate our Demo game at Carronade to his memory.
A lovely gentleman and a pleasure to have known him.
ReplyDeleteWe have been so fortunate to have shared a wargame table with him.
Thank you Charlie x
Very sad. Memories of being trounced by him in a huge SYW game when due to some fortunate dice rolls, he snatched victory from the jaws of defeat!

Terribly sad news. I first met Charlie while working at the Model Shop. As he worked nearby he used to visit the shop regularly. Over the years we still managed to have a chat. At the moment we are using the scenarios from his With Pike and Musket book.
ReplyDeleteSo proud to have known such a real gentleman as Charlie. R.I.P. Sir.
Sad news indeed. Condolences to his family and friends.

You know my views on Charlie, John. He was just a great bloke in every sense of the term. I think his first two books are still about the best ever written for wargamers.
