Last battle .15mm Roman campaign.

This will be Crustinuts' last battle, which will beg the question-does it mean he is killed,or just that he is fighting his last battle in Brittania??-Read on!

After the Iceni tribe ambushed Decus,Crustinuts has decided to teach them a very Roman lesson! He has also decided to emulate Decus by fighting in the front line if he gets the chance-mad or brave??

Top photo shows the terrain map, bottom shows the troop dispositions before any moves-Crustinuts has ordered part of his cavalry to do a wide out-flanking move to catch the Iceni cavalry in their flank, and has also ordered two cohorts of his second line 23rd Legion to "right face" and also catch the Iceni cavalry in the flank-wonderful plan!!

Top shows the "trap" being prepared for the Iceni cavalry, bottom shows the 24th legion preparing for the Iceni warbands!

The warbands move ever closer to the Legions-all rests on the "trap" being sprung, and the Iceni cavalry being beaten, allowing the Roman cavalry to sweep the field!!!

Top shows the out-flanking cavalry appearing, bottom shows the "trap" well and truly sprung-you've got to feel sorry for the Iceni cavalry haven't you???

The warbands are getting to within Pila range, which means that the Legions are within javelin range!!!

With war cries, trumpets, horns and shouted orders, the two side crash into each other-this was a real "slugfest" melees going this way and that-thrilling stuff!(look at the man on the white horse-he is getting very close to the action)-is it Crustinuts?-YES!!!!!

The end of the Iceni cavalry-once reformed the Roman cavalry and the two cohorts from the 23rd Legion, moved onto the flank and rear of the warbands!!

Top photo shows the infantry locked in combat-bottom photo shows the Roman cavalry wreaking havoc on the flanks and rear of the warbands fighting Legion 23.At this point Crustinuts pushed his way into the front rank, but was assailed by a mounted warrior, who struck him a deadly blow to his back and left shoulder-oh dear!!!

Top photo shows the "wargames" version of events-bottom photo shows an actual photograph taken at the time,by a war correspondent who just happened to be there when Crustinuts was struck!!(does anyone believe this crap?)

The Roman cavalry charge-top photo is the wargames version of events, bottom is an actual photograph taken at the time by a...(yeah,yeah!) By this time the Iceni could see what was happening and decided to retire(it's good being retired!) bringing this "cracking" game to an end.

One final shot showing the Iceni "harriers" heading for the hills-Crustinuts stayed on the field long enough to see his VICTORY,then was carried back to his camp for the surgeons to attend to his injuries-will he survive?

This was yet another thoroughly entertaining and exciting game-9 moves and two hours in duration, a great way to get rid of the Covid Blues!

  1. Very entertaining swan song for Crustinuts. Silly sod clearly needs to return to leading from the rear... or retire to his villa near Rome? Super collection. I do hope you have more adventures planned post-Crustinuts if it is to be his last outing. Cheers Chris :)

  3. So Crustinuts came through... with his threat. These Romans are not good at losing, are they?
I really like the way you made the wargame match the period photographs. Ahead of their time the Romans. Clearly something else locked in monasteries until later in history...
